Hey there! As a supplier of coated steel drums, I often get asked about the inspection procedures we follow. So, I thought I’d share the ins and outs of how we make sure our drums meet the highest quality standards. Coated Steel Drum

Let’s start right at the very beginning, when the raw materials arrive at our facility. First off, we give the steel sheets a thorough visual once – over. We’re looking for any obvious flaws like scratches, dents, or rust spots. Even the tiniest defect in the raw steel can cause problems down the line, so we’re super strict about this. We also check the thickness of the steel sheets using a caliper. The thickness has to be spot – on according to our specifications; if it’s too thick or too thin, it can affect the strength and durability of the final drum.
Once we’re satisfied with the raw steel, it’s time for the coating process. We use a high – quality coating that not only protects the drum from corrosion but also gives it a nice finish. During the coating application, we monitor the thickness of the coating. This is crucial because if the coating is too thin, it won’t provide adequate protection, and if it’s too thick, it can lead to issues like cracking or peeling. We use special measuring devices to check the coating thickness at multiple points on the drum.
After the coating is applied, the drums go through a drying process. We closely watch the temperature and duration of the drying cycle. If the drums aren’t dried properly, the coating might not fully cure, which can again lead to all sorts of problems later. Any drum that doesn’t seem to be drying as it should is pulled out for further analysis.
Now, onto the forming stage. We shape the coated steel sheets into drums, and this is where we start checking for things like proper seams. The seams have to be welded or joined perfectly. If there are any gaps or weak spots in the seam, it can make the drum leak – prone. We use non – destructive testing methods, like ultrasonic testing, to check the integrity of the seams. This way, we can find out if there are any internal defects that aren’t visible to the naked eye.
Once the drums are fully formed, we conduct a hydrostatic test. This is a really important one. We fill the drums with water and pressurize them to a specific level. Then we keep an eye out for any signs of leakage. If a drum leaks during this test, it’s a clear sign that there’s a problem with its structure, and it’s immediately set aside for repair or disposal.
We also do a drop test. We drop the drums from a certain height onto a hard surface to simulate real – world handling. This helps us see how well the drums can withstand impacts. If the drum gets damaged during the drop test, we analyze what went wrong. Maybe it was a problem with the steel quality, the coating, or the way it was formed.
Another aspect we look at is the closure system. The lids and seals of the drums have to work perfectly. We check that they fit snugly and can be opened and closed easily without any issues. We also test the seals to make sure they’re airtight and watertight. This is crucial, especially if the drums are going to be used to store liquids or sensitive materials.
In addition to these physical tests, we also do some chemical analysis. We take samples from the coating and the steel to make sure they meet the required chemical standards. We’re looking for things like the presence of harmful substances. We don’t want any chemicals in our drums that could contaminate the products they’re going to hold.
We keep detailed records of all these inspections. Every drum has a unique identifier, and we note down all the inspection results for each one. This way, if there are any issues down the line, we can easily trace back and find out what happened during the manufacturing process.
Our quality control team is always on the ball. They’re constantly upgrading our inspection techniques as new technologies and standards come up. We’re committed to making sure that every single coated steel drum that leaves our facility is of the best possible quality.
